Thrace Wine Weekend — Three Nights

Şarköy vineyards from Istanbul.

A three-night escape west of Istanbul into the vineyards of Thrace and the shoreline of Şarköy.

The Highlight

Why this journey

This is the weekend escape that feels impossibly far from Istanbul, though you're only two hours west. The vineyards of Thrace roll down to the Sea of Marmara, the cellars are small and family-run, and the pace is agricultural — slow, seasonal, and utterly restorative. You'll return to the city sun-tired, wine-educated, and quietly convinced that Thrace is one of Türkiye's best-kept secrets.

Day by day

How the journey unfolds.

Day 1

Istanbul to Şarköy

Private transfer through Silivri and Tekirdağ.

Your driver collects you from your Istanbul hotel mid-morning and takes you west through Silivri and Tekirdağ, skirting the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara. The city thins, the landscape opens, and by early afternoon, you're in Şarköy — a quiet fishing town surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and the kind of light that makes everything feel slower. Your small hotel overlooks the water, with a terrace for evening drinks and a seafood restaurant next door. After settling in, wander the harbour, watch the boats return, and feel the shift from city to coast. Dinner is grilled fish, fresh bread, and a carafe of local white.

Day 2

Trakya Bağ Rotası

Three-cellar tasting day with an English-speaking guide.

Your English-speaking guide collects you after breakfast for a full day on the Trakya Bağ Rotası — the Thrace Wine Route. You'll visit three family-run cellars, each with its own character and story. Chamlija is known for its reds, Barbare for its sparkling wines, and Melen for its natural approach. The tastings are generous, the winemakers are present, and the conversations are as nourishing as the wine. Between cellars, you'll drive through rolling vineyards, stop for lunch at a village lokanta, and learn why Thrace — with its maritime climate and ancient winemaking traditions — is quietly becoming one of Türkiye's most exciting wine regions.

Day 3

Sea + olive oil

Morning at Şarköy shore, olive-mill tasting, return to Istanbul.

Your final morning is spent on the Şarköy shore — a pebble beach, calm water, and the kind of silence that makes you wonder why you don't do this more often. Mid-morning, your guide takes you to a nearby olive oil mill for a tasting. The producer walks you through the harvest, the pressing, and the grading, and you'll taste oils that range from grassy and sharp to buttery and mild. By early afternoon, you're back in the car, heading east toward Istanbul. You arrive by evening, sun-tired and restored, with a case of wine and a jar of oil in the boot.

Local Secrets

What the guidebooks don't tell you.

Small, insider-only moments we quietly arrange for guests on this journey.

  • At Chamlija Winery, ask to taste the Papazkarası — a local red grape that's peppery, earthy, and deeply Thracian.

  • In Şarköy, walk the harbour at dawn when the fishing boats unload and the cafés are brewing the first tea.

  • Stop at a roadside tezgah for fresh sunflower seeds and cherry tomatoes — still warm from the field.

  • Ask your guide about the olive oil mills around Mürefte — small producers, generous tastings, and oil you'll want to take home.

Best time to visit

September and October are harvest season — the vineyards are golden, the cellars are busy, and the air smells of fermenting grapes. Spring is quiet and green, with wildflowers dotting the hills. Summer is warm and perfect for swimming off Şarköy's shore. Winter is atmospheric and empty, though some wineries close for the season.

Good to know

  • The drive from Istanbul to Şarköy takes around two hours, depending on traffic leaving the city.
  • Tastings are generous and unhurried — pace yourself and drink plenty of water between cellars.
  • Şarköy is a working fishing town, not a resort — expect simple, honest seafood and zero pretence.
  • Carry cash for small producers, olive mills, and roadside vendors.
