Istanbul & Cappadocia Essentials — Six Nights

Two icons, comfortably arranged.

Six nights that combine the imperial city and the Anatolian valley — the classic first trip to Türkiye, well-organised and easy.

The Highlight

Why this journey

This is the trip that delivers both grandeur and otherworldliness — the imperial city and the lunar valley, the Bosphorus and the fairy chimneys. It's the classic introduction to Türkiye, and it works because the rhythm is right: three nights to absorb Istanbul, three nights to float above Cappadocia at dawn. You return home with two entirely different landscapes in your memory, and both feel essential.

Day by day

How the journey unfolds.

Day 1

Arrival Istanbul

Private transfer, 4-star hotel check-in, evening walk.

Your driver meets you at Istanbul airport and delivers you to your hotel in Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu. After check-in, your local host takes you on a gentle evening walk — past lit-up minarets, through cobbled side streets, and into a neighbourhood café for your first glass of Turkish tea. You'll talk through the next few days, get a sense of the city's geography, and settle into the rhythm. No jetlag pressure, no formal tours yet — just a warm, unhurried introduction.

Day 2

Old city day

Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı with a guide.

Your guide meets you after breakfast and takes you into the heart of the old city. Hagia Sophia first — built in 537 AD as the world's largest cathedral, converted to a mosque in 1453, and still breathtaking in scale and light. Then the Blue Mosque, shimmering with 20,000 Iznik tiles. Finally, Topkapı Palace, the sprawling residence of Ottoman sultans for 400 years. You'll walk through the harem, admire the treasury's emeralds and daggers, and stand in courtyards overlooking the Bosphorus. The guide brings context, stories, and pace — you're never rushed.

Day 3

Bosphorus + bazaars

Ferry along the strait, Grand Bazaar in the afternoon.

Morning begins in the Grand Bazaar, a covered labyrinth of 4,000 shops dating back to 1461. Your guide helps you navigate the ceramics, carpets, and lanterns without overwhelm. Then the Spice Bazaar, smaller and more fragrant, piled with saffron, pistachios, and lokum. In the afternoon, you board a public ferry and sail the full length of the Bosphorus — past palaces, fortresses, fishing villages, and the suspension bridges linking Europe and Asia. It's slow, scenic, and utterly Istanbul.

Day 4

Fly to Cappadocia

Domestic flight, cave hotel check-in, sunset in Göreme.

After a leisurely breakfast, you're transferred to the airport for a short domestic flight to Cappadocia. On arrival, your driver takes you to your cave hotel in Göreme or Uçhisar — carved into the soft volcanic rock, with arched ceilings and terraces overlooking the valleys. The afternoon is yours to settle in, wander the village lanes, and watch the sun set over the fairy chimneys. The landscape feels like another planet, and the silence is profound.

Day 5

Balloon + valleys

Optional shared balloon flight, group tour of Rose and Red Valleys.

If you've chosen the optional balloon flight, your day begins in the dark — collected at 4.30am, driven to the launch site, and lifted into the sky as the sun rises over the valleys. It's silent, surreal, and unforgettable. After landing and champagne, you return to the hotel for breakfast. In the afternoon, a small group tour takes you into the Rose and Red Valleys, where you'll hike among the fairy chimneys, visit rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes, and watch the landscape change colour as the light softens.

Day 6

Underground cities & farewell

Derinkuyu in the morning, flight to Istanbul for departure.

Your final morning takes you underground — literally. Derinkuyu is one of Cappadocia's vast subterranean cities, carved eight levels deep and once home to 20,000 people fleeing invasion. Your guide walks you through the tunnels, stables, and chapels, explaining how whole communities lived here in secret. Afterwards, you're driven to the airport for your flight back to Istanbul, connecting smoothly to your onward journey. You leave with two entirely different landscapes in your memory, both indelible.

Local Secrets

What the guidebooks don't tell you.

Small, insider-only moments we quietly arrange for guests on this journey.

  • In Sultanahmet, slip into the Basilica Cistern just before closing — the crowds thin and the columns feel ancient again.

  • In Cappadocia, ask your hotel to arrange a quiet sunrise viewpoint if you skip the balloon — Uçhisar Castle at dawn is nearly empty.

  • Buy a jar of Cappadocian apricot jam from a family shop in Göreme — it tastes like the valley itself.

  • On the Bosphorus ferry, sit on the open upper deck and watch the gulls follow the boat all the way to the Black Sea.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to early November are ideal — mild in Istanbul, crisp and clear in Cappadocia. Balloon flights are most reliable in these months, with calm mornings and sharp light. Summer is warm but manageable; winter in Cappadocia can be snowy and magical, though balloon cancellations are more common. Spring brings wildflowers to the valleys.

Good to know

  • E-Visa available online for most nationalities — apply a few days before departure.
  • Domestic flights between Istanbul and Cappadocia are short, frequent, and reliable.
  • Cappadocia mornings start early for balloon flights — prepare for 4.30am pickups.
  • Cave hotels have uneven floors and low ceilings — pack light and wear comfortable shoes.
